Cynthia Drouin, MA, LMHC

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

Words always have had a fascination for me, with their power to evoke pictures in our minds, helping us envision events, environments, and relationships. I was drawn to journalism, literature, and creative writing, finally finding in poetry the nuanced use of words for what I’ve always felt was their greatest purpose: understanding. As a therapist, I continue to broaden my respect for words and their strength: how difficult it can be to find the words to express what we have experienced, what we are feeling, what we long for, to be heard and understood. I view my role as a therapist as a privilege. I am honored to listen to my clients’ stories, to help them sort through which words can lead, not just to my understanding, but to their own. I enjoy working with adults of all ages who are seeking support, growth, acceptance, and change. I also specialize in providing therapy to mental health professionals.

I earned a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Christian Theological Seminary in 2016. I have worked in private practice, on inpatient units in behavioral health settings, and as an outpatient counselor leading small and large therapy and psychoeducation groups. I was trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which emphasizes the role our significant early relationships and life experiences may play in what we find challenging today. My special interests and expertise include assisting individuals with personal crisis management, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, life transitions and adjustments, relationship concerns, and self-worth. I value working with clients on issues related to life review and aging, wellness, illness and disability, communication, and creative expression as well.

In addition to my psychodynamic training, I incorporate cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior perspectives, and am clinically oriented towards humanistic, relational, and intersubjective approaches to therapy.  I have completed advanced-level work in Relational Gestalt Therapy, and trainings in Mentalization-Based Treatment and Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, both of which emphasize the ways our perceptions of others influence our interactions with them.  I view therapy as a collaborative process in which a strong, trusting, non-judgmental relationship between us will lead to your greatest benefit. I am committed to providing an open, safe, supportive environment for you to express and explore your deepest concerns, in the hope that together we may restore your sense of well-being.
