A short call can hold a lot of possibility. It’s a chance for you to meet your potential therapist, share a bit about what’s on your heart, and see if this could be a safe space to land.
At Cadence Psychology Studio, we use these 15 minutes to get to know you, answer your questions, and help you decide whether to take the next step together. Here’s how to use that time well—without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Before the Call: Give Yourself a Moment to Reflect
It’s normal to feel a mix of hope and nerves. A little preparation can help you feel grounded when the conversation starts. You might think about:
What’s feeling most important right now. Is there a relationship, pattern, or life change you want to focus on?
What matters most in a therapist. Do you imagine someone who is gentle and reflective, or direct and structured?
The practical side. Your scheduling needs, whether you prefer in-person or virtual, or how you’d like to handle payment.
If you’ve been in therapy before, it can be helpful to share what worked well and what didn’t—it gives us a starting point for tailoring our approach to you.
During the Call: Share, Ask, and Notice How You Feel
A good consult feels like a two-way exchange. We’ll ask questions like:
Have you been in therapy before?
What’s bringing you here now?
What are you hoping for in this process?
You might also want to ask us:
How do you typically work with couples/individuals?
What will the first few sessions look like?
How do you measure or notice progress?
What are your rates and payment options?
If you’re calling with your partner for couples therapy: You may want to ask your partner if they’d like to speak first. It can set the tone for both voices to be heard equally.
The Goal: Clarity and Comfort for Your Next Step

This isn’t about solving everything in one call—it’s about feeling out the connection.
Do you feel heard?
Do you sense you could be yourself here?
If it feels like a good fit, we’ll help you schedule your first appointment right then. If not, we’re happy to recommend other therapists who might be a better match.
Either way, you’ll leave knowing more about your options—and hopefully feeling a little lighter for having started the conversation.
